How to become a Transit and intercity bus driver

All bus drivers need a CDL with a passenger endorsement, and some earn it during on-the-job training. A good driving record and physical, hearing and vision requirements apply; background checks and state licensing details vary. School-bus drivers also need a school-bus endorsement.

Entry route and requirements

National guidance: partial. Check the named programme and licensing authority before committing. Admission and local availability remain unverified.

  1. Check entry requirements
Compare an actual transit employer's entry requirements and training offer.
  2. Verify training and credentials
Confirm licence/permit timing, paid hours, first paycheck and shift availability; do not substitute a generic national education norm for an employer's stated rule.

AI, changing tasks and beginner jobs

Past review date; recheck these observations before making a commitment.

Weighted observed task exposure: 0.000 on a 0–1 index (March 2026 release; August/November 2025 usage). This is not a percentage of workers replaced or a hiring probability.

Occupation use and task evidence

Dated AI use evidence

  • Weighted observed task exposure: 0.000 on a 0–1 index (March 2026 release; August/November 2025 usage). This is not a percentage of workers replaced or a hiring probability.
  • May 2026, global Claude chat/Cowork: occupation share of classified activity 0.00% (published rounded zero). Within this occupation's classified activity: automation-pattern share 85.00%; assistance-pattern share 15.00%.
  • May 2026, global Claude first-party API (excluding Claude Code): occupation share of classified activity 0.01%. Within this occupation's classified activity: automation-pattern share 98.57%; assistance-pattern share 1.43%.
  • These are separate product samples and rounded, thresholded cells. Shares are not employer/worker adoption rates and cannot be combined across products. Missing or zero usage does not mean AI-proof work.

Microsoft applicability cross-check

  • Microsoft AI applicability score: 0.188 on a 0–1 index, based on U.S. Bing Copilot conversations from January through September 2024.
  • The published occupation score averages a user-goal score and a nonphysical AI-action score. Each side weights completion times moderate-or-higher impact scope for covered O*NET intermediate work activities. Coverage requires conversation share greater than 0.05 percent.
  • Applicability indicates where a consumer conversational AI may be useful. It is not job replacement, employer adoption, worker adoption, entry hiring, or a forecast.

Broader automation beyond LLMs

  • Selected occupation and industry observations, kept separate from LLM exposure and not converted into job-loss probabilities.
  • No reviewed broader-automation case is mapped to this occupation. This is an evidence gap, not evidence that the work is protected from robotics, self-service systems or other automation.

Tasks to verify with an employer

    • O*NET task 3144: Inspect vehicles and check gas, oil, and water levels prior to departure. Published zero in the historical LLM sample. Ask how beginners do this task, which tools are used and what a qualified person still checks.
    • O*NET task 3146: Park vehicles at loading areas so that passengers can board. Published zero in the historical LLM sample. Ask how beginners do this task, which tools are used and what a qualified person still checks.
    • These examples are occupation tasks, not a verified beginner job description. LLM observations do not measure robotics, self-service equipment or all other automation.
    Hiring research and conditional scenarios

Some recent research flags weaker entry hiring in exposed work; broad labor-market studies do not yet show a clear economy-wide AI effect. Check this employer's recent beginner hires and training route. Age-group findings do not determine an individual's prospects.

Stanford Digital Economy Lab (2026-08-12): The revised working paper reports a 19% employment shortfall for young workers in highly exposed occupations relative to keeping pace with less-exposed peers, mainly through lower hiring. It does not identify that gap as a causal AI effect or a personal hiring probability. Education controls weaken the pattern; some divergence predates generative AI and the ADP pattern is stronger than national survey benchmarks. The August headline uses a different descriptive measure from earlier adjusted headlines.

Yale Budget Lab (2026-08-19): The August update finds no clear broad labor-market footprint aligned with AI exposure or usage. This is a different population and measurement approach from Stanford's young-worker payroll comparison. A broad null finding does not establish that entry routes are unaffected or predict what happens next.

U.S. Census Bureau (2026-05-26): BTOS reported 19.8% of businesses using AI in any business function in the period ending May 3. This is national business adoption, not adoption in your occupation or at a local employer. The question broadened in November 2025 from producing goods/services to any business function; do not interpret the discontinuity as like-for-like adoption growth.

Anthropic (September 2026, model v1.0): Economic outcomes depend on capability, adoption, autonomy, productivity and job-switching assumptions. These are scenarios, not probabilities assigned to this career. The model omits several economic/policy shocks and hyper-capable robotics; it cannot certify that physical work is protected.

Charted planning prompts, not quantified forecasts or a reproduction of the 2030 model

    • Next 1–3 years: If adoption stays limited at employers you can reach. Verify current entry requirements and pay; build core skills and keep checking whether the workflow changes.
    • Next 1–3 years: If AI absorbs more routine beginner tasks. Ask how new entrants gain supervised practice, what evidence of skill is accepted, and whether paid entry places are still available before committing to training.
    • Next 1–3 years: If employers use AI mainly to assist workers. Build subject knowledge and output-checking skills; ask what people still review, sign off and remain accountable for.
    • Beyond three years: If capabilities, robotics, policy or demand change substantially. Revisit the route and budget. Current LLM usage measures do not cover all automation and do not establish a protected career.

    Common questions

What is the entry route for Transit and intercity bus driver?

All bus drivers need a CDL with a passenger endorsement, and some earn it during on-the-job training. A good driving record and physical, hearing and vision requirements apply; background checks and state licensing details vary. School-bus drivers also need a school-bus endorsement.

How long will training and the job search take?

Ask the named provider about prerequisites, programme length, clinical or supervised practice, exams, and the next intake. Training duration does not establish how long finding a job will take.

What will it cost, and what could I earn at the start?

Local costs and starting pay are unverified. Obtain current quotes for tuition, exams, equipment, transport, and time without earnings. National occupational medians are not entry wage offers.
